Integrative Oncology (Cancer) Consultations
Dr. Heidi Puc’s greater than 20 year experience in conventional medical hematology and oncology, merged with her ten year experience in integrative medicine and oncology, gives her a very unique ability to serve patients at risk for, diagnosed with, or recovered from cancer. Typical consultations include the following:
Patients with numerous relatives having had cancer, and they wish to reduce their risk for cancer development.
Patients just diagnosed with cancer, who need to clarify cancer stage and grade, and would like Dr. Puc’s opinion on their conventional oncologist’s treatment recommendations, including how natural remedies can merge with the conventional, in either the adjuvant (curative) or advanced cancer setting.
Patients who have had surgery, radiation therapy, and/or chemotherapy for cancer previously or at the time of consultation and wish to improve their quality of life and decrease side effects from such therapies using an integrative approach.
Patients dealing with cancer who decline conventional therapies and would prefer to only use oral and or intravenous herbals and nutraceuticals.
Patients who are cancer survivors who wish to reduce their risk for cancer recurrence or development of new types of cancers.
In all of the above scenarios, Dr. Puc focuses on strengthening the patient’s “terrain,” namely the support structure and components of the body dealing with cancer (including immune system, detoxification system, mitochondrial function, gut microbiome, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential, and nutrient levels).
In addition, patients with cancer may seek a consultation with Dr. Puc specifically for a medical marijuana prescription, for the diagnosis of cancer and related conditions such as nausea or severe weight and appetite loss.
Integrative Lyme Disease Treatment
Lyme disease, caused by an organism known as Borrelia burgdorferi, is a tick-borne illness that is rapidly spreading worldwide; it is the number one “vector borne” spreading infectious disease in the United States and in Europe, and even countries beyond Europe. It can present as acute disease, from a tick bite alone to a tick bite associated with a bullseye rash, or a presentation that includes associated symptoms (fatigue, muscle and joint aches, headaches, and others). Often, other organisms are carried in the same tick known as co-infectors (examples: bartonella, babesia) which can make diagnosis and treatment challenging. Chronic Lyme disease can present with a host of symptoms that can mimic other conditions such as autoimmune disease and neuropsychiatric disease, and can be difficult to treat, especially when not recognized. Diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease is further complicated by differing guidelines and treatment philosophies, and the standard testing for Lyme disease is not 100% accurate.
Drs. Puc and Lazzarini are members of, and receive ongoing training through, the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS).
Dr. Heidi Puc has been trained by the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) and has been mentored by Dr. Richard Horowitz, a world-renowned expert in Lyme disease. She has also worked alongside Dr. Ronald Stram at the Stram Center for Integrative Medicine. Her approach to treatment of Lyme and the co-infectors is a clinical one, hearing the patient’s story and symptoms, assessing their vitals and physical exam, and selecting most appropriate testing for Lyme which includes specialty lab testing. She designs an individualized treatment program for the patient, addressing a detoxifying and anti-inflammatory nutrition plan, physical activity, restful sleep, stress reduction, and, when appropriate, herbals and/or antibiotics (oral or IV), or homeopathic remedies amongst others.
Dr. Amy Lazzarini gained experience in the treatment of Lyme Disease and its associated co-infections at the Virginia Center for Health and Wellness, where a majority of her patients suffered from tick-borne illnesses. She is grateful for the guidance she received there from her Lyme literate mentors, Dr. Andrew Heyman and Dr. Laura Stone; as well as for her training and mentorship with Dr. Richard Horowitz, a world-renowned expert in Lyme disease. Because of the complex and diverse nature of Lyme Disease, Dr. Lazzarini realizes there isn't a "one size fits all" approach to its management, and therefore incorporates the necessary specialty diagnostic measures and treatments that are best suited for each individual patient depending on their symptoms and preferences. Along with herbal and/or antibiotic treatments (oral or IV) aimed at eradicating Lyme Disease and other co-infections, she also addresses the underlying chronic inflammation and neurological symptoms that often accompany Lyme Disease through focusing on nutrition, physical movement, sleep, stress management and detoxification; and makes use of additional targeted treatments such as compounded medications, homeopathic remedies, herbs, and supplements.
Integrative Wellness and Prevention
Our current healthcare system is most successful for acute, mechanically correctable disease, but falls short in terms of prevention, integrative practices, and management of many chronic diseases. Costs for healthcare have rapidly escalated yet lifespan is actually declining. The Western approach to healthcare is a disease-management approach and is very reductionistic in view, not addressing whole-person care. Prevention secures less than 5% of the funding in the healthcare industry, despite the large contributions to population health it makes.
Dr. Heidi Puc, with an integrative medicine approach, focuses on whole person care, strengthening a person’s biologic terrain and focusing on health promotion. She addresses optimum nutrition and herbal/supplement use, physical exercise and rest, resilience and stress management, and social and spiritual connection. Wherever patients are in terms of the spectrum of health and disease, Dr. Heidi Puc will consult as to how to best support their wellness and reduce the risk of illness, as well as to integratively manage any already identified chronic disease processes.
Integrative Nutrition and Holistic Health Coaching
Heidi Baldwin’s Approach: She practices a holistic approach to health and wellness, which means she looks at how all areas of your life are connected. Does stress at your job or in your relationship cause you to overeat? Does lack of sleep or low energy prevent you from exercising? Are you eating foods that aren't optimal for your individual body? Are you consuming too much sugar? Are you getting enough fat in your diet? Is your energy field out of balance? Do you have some sort of spiritual practice that resonates with you? Do you have FUN on a regular basis? As you work together, you will look at how all parts of your life affect your health as a whole. You’ll develop a deeper understanding of the food and lifestyle choices that work best for you, and implement lasting changes that will improve your energy, balance, and health.
Patients/clients can see Heidi for individual consultations to work through dietary needs for specific health situations, or they can embark on a longer health coaching relationship to work on long-term health goals with active support.
Integrative Holistic Nutrition focuses on the importance of incorporating whole foods into your diet, while finding balance in the other things that fuel your life, such as relationships, careers, spirituality, and exercise. Finding balance in your life, and fueling your body properly is a critical component in the healing process. What you eat affects everything, so Heidi helps you learn how to make the best choices.
Heidi Baldwin also specializes in seasonal detoxes where she coaches individuals to spend 5 days avoiding toxins while eating delicious seasonally appropriate whole foods that fuel and help repair this body. This helps the body’s natural detoxification process and allows toxins to be released from the body rather than being stored in the fat cells as is the case when our bodies are overloaded with toxins. Those who enroll in a seasonal detox receive a detoxing handbook, suggested recipes, shopping lists, supplements guide, a variety of bonus materials, daily support, and live detox kick off and wrap-up calls. The seasonal detox is a great way to reboot your system and learn which foods aren’t your personally best options.
Oral and IV Nutraceuticals
Dr. Heidi Puc may recommend certain oral or intravenous (IV) vitamins, herbals, or supplements to help patients with chronic illness to achieve optimal wellness. Although eating whole foods provides the substrates needed for essential bodily functions and enzymatic processes, taking isolated herbals in relatively higher doses is often helpful to restore the balance needed for health in a variety of disorders. High quality oral supplements will be available onsite and by online order at IMofCNY, and a variety of IV therapies of single vitamins or compounded blends will be available in the IMofCNY infusion room. These IV therapies include:
IV VITAMIN C: In low doses, functions as an antioxidant (10 grams or less); at higher doses, provides pro-oxidant benefits and can eradicate certain viral and bacterial infections, enhances wound healing through collagen production, provides immune system support, improves quality of life, and reduces toxicities from other therapies.
GLUTATHIONE: Often referred to as the body’s master antioxidant, it is a powerful free radical scavenger crucial for detoxifying and maintaining a strong and healthy immune system.
DETOXIFY: A compounded blend to assist in body’s detoxification process.
BASIC MYERS: Multivitamin complex to rehydrate, provide antioxidant therapy, and boost the immune system.
SUPER MYERS: Restores hydration, provides antioxidant therapy, boosts the immune system, and replenishes essential vitamins and minerals. Unlike the BASIC MYERS, this treatment contains 25 grams of IV Vitamin C for greater antioxidant and pro-oxidant effect.
RESILIENCE: This is our immune boosting IV therapy which contains vitamins, minerals and other anti-oxidants including 25 grams of Vitamin C and Zinc. Great for improving resistance to bacterial and viral infections.
VITALITY BOOST: This treatment offers adrenal support for those experiencing undue and prolonged emotional and physical stress. Chronic stress can affect hormone production, sleep quality, mood, and can deplete energy levels. Contains Taurine which calms the nervous system.
VITAMIN B12 INJECTION: Increases your natural energy levels, benefits mood and increases red blood cell production and is crucial for a healthy nervous system.
COQ10 INJECTION: Provides energy needed for cellular function. Enhances cardiovascular health and functions as an antioxidant. CoQ10 can help with exercise performance and endurance. Essential to replenish CoQ10 which is lost when on Statin therapy to lower cholesterol.
REHYDRATION SALINE: Physiologic saline solution to replete salt and water lost excessively by the body or in cases where enough fluid cannot be taken in.

Reiki is a simple, non-invasive, natural, and safe method of healing that everyone can use. This technique originated over 100 years ago in Japan for stress reduction and relaxation; it also promotes healing. A practitioner channels Reiki using a light touch on specific points of the body to promote the flow of life force energy to enhance one’s physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. It is administered to the client while they are lying fully clothed on a massage table. A treatment generally feels like a warm glowing radiance that flows through you and around you, and is very relaxing.
Since Reiki treats the whole person, its many beneficial effects include: relaxation and feelings of peace, a sense of security and well-being, contentment, focus, clarity, and the reduction of anxiety and stress. Reiki has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects of various medical treatments, and promote recovery from injuries, surgery, and long-term illness. One session of Reiki can result in immediate benefits, however, people dealing with chronic or long-term illness or conditions generally find more benefit from a series of Reiki sessions, or on-going regularly scheduled visits. Reiki is a complementary therapy used in many hospitals both locally and around the country.
Heidi Baldwin, an experienced Reiki Master Teacher, teaches all levels of Reiki (Reiki I, Reiki II, and Reiki Master/Teacher Apprenticeship) as well as kids Reiki classes that she developed.
Pranic Healing® is a highly evolved and tested system of energy based healing that uses prana (life-force) to balance, harmonize, and transform the body's energy processes. While a general Pranic Healing balancing can be beneficial, this technique is generally used for condition specific situations. This powerful and effective system of no-touch energy healing is based on the fundamental principles that the body is a self-repairing living entity that possesses the ability to heal itself and that the healing process is accelerated by increasing the life force. Physical contact is not required because the practitioner is working on the bioplasmic or energy body (aura) and not directly on the physical body. The energy body absorbs the life energy and distributes it throughout the physical body to muscles, organs, glands, etc. Pranic Healing works on the energy body because physical ailments first appear as energetic disruptions in the aura before manifesting as problems in the physical body. This energy healing method helps nearly all physical conditions and illness, as well as anxiety, stress, irritability, depression, grief, addictions, phobias, and conditions such as ADD, ADHD, Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, relationship issues, and can even help the client quit smoking.
Heidi Baldwin has training in Basic and Advanced Pranic Healing, Pranic Psychotherapy, and Pranic Crystal Healing, which she offers individually or integrates into Reiki healing sessions as appropriate.
* * Please note that Pranic Psychotherapy is NOT in any way a form of traditional psychotherapy that is conducted by a trained licensed psychiatrist or psychotherapist. Pranic Psychotherapy is the application of Pranic Healing® techniques to promote healing and alleviate emotional and mental imbalances.
Meditation at its most basic essence is a “quieting of the mind” and attaining a state of consciousness that is different from the typical waking state. It is that moment when all thoughts have stopped racing through your mind, and you feel a state of deep sense of peace because your mind is finally calm and silent. During meditation, your mind is clear, relaxed, and inwardly focused; you are fully awake and alert, but your mind does not focus on the external world around you.
Meditation can improve your life in many ways including stress reduction, improved concentration, slowed aging, increased self-awareness, improved sleep, reduction of anxiety, and increased happiness. Meditation encourages a healthy lifestyle, promotes emotional health, lengthens your attention span, benefits cardiovascular and immune health, and can decrease blood pressure. It increases mental strength, focus, memory retention, cognitive skills, and longevity. Meditation is something that everyone of any age can do to improve their overall health and wellbeing. It can be done anywhere at any time of day, even if you only have 5 minutes to devote to your practice.
Heidi Baldwin offers guided group meditations including guided New Earth meditations and heart centering meditations. She also offers a unique personal guided meditation experience: Dynamic Consciousness sessions, which combine energy work with a personally guided Conscious Meditation™ (developed by Sheila Applegate) to help you access your higher levels of consciousness, identify physical, emotional, and spiritual blockages that are holding you back from leading the life you desire, and connecting with your guides and creative energy to shift your life in the direction of your dreams and desires. Dynamic Consciousness sessions can be done in person, or over the phone.

Cannabidiol or CBD is one of more than 80 chemical substances known as cannabinoids, which are all found in the cannabis plant. CBD is the second most abundant compound in cannabis, or hemp. Full Spectrum CBD is believed to be the best way to consume cannabinoids to receive the medicinal benefits of the plant. Full spectrum means all of the plants cannabinoids are present, including not only cannabidiol (CBD), but also Cannabinol (CBN), Cannabicyclol (CBL), and Cannabichromevarinic Acid (CBCVA) to name a few. There are more than 80 cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, and when all of these cannabinoids are present it creates what is called the entourage effect.
In order for the hemp to be legal in the United States it must contain less than .3% THC or tetrahydrocannibinol. Heidi Baldwin offers a CBD oil from CBD BioCare that is organically grown in Kentucky, fully certified, and legal in all 50 states. At CBD BioCare’s CBD oil is extracted and separated from the very finest medicinal hemp grown. To be legal in all 50 states it must contain less than .3% THC, but their CBD oil contains ZERO THC! It comes from the only large scale, US based, 100% federally registered producer and distributor, of the highest quality medicinal hemp in the United States.
Unlike THC (which is usually a major component of medical marijuana), CBD and the rest of the cannabinoids do not cause a high because it does not act on the same pathways as THC, making CBD oil a good choice for those who do not wish to consume THC. Although the FDA has not yet recognized CBD oil as a treatment or cure for any disease, there are dozens of studies on PubMed discussing the many benefits of using CBD oil as a dietary supplement.

Tick Removal and Acute Treatment
Doctors Heidi Puc and Amy Lazzarini at Integrative Medicine of Central New York offer ACUTE TICK BITE CONSULTATIONS to evaluate you and provide recommendations for testing and treatment based on your individual assessment. They can also perform tick removal in the office, and provide information on where to have the tick tested if you so choose.
A common practice when someone gets a tick bite is to have the tick tested for Lyme disease (borrelia). This poses some challenges, and patients end up not receiving the treatment they need to prevent tickborne infections. Public health departments only test ticks for borrelia, but not for the other bacteria/co-infectors that can infect ticks. Additionally, results often take days to weeks to report and the patient misses an important window of time to initiate appropriate treatment.
Most patients we see have been chronically ill with debilitating symptoms for months to years. If tickborne infections are not properly diagnosed or treated early, people can develop severe symptoms that persist. Initiating treatment right after a tick bite prevents bacteria from spreading to joints, organs, and the central nervous system and elsewhere.
A single 200 mg dose of doxycycline has proven to NOT be enough for Lyme disease prophylaxis, and treatment for 20 days or less with antibiotics in someone with a “bullseye” rash has a high failure rate. In addition, studies have shown ticks can carry multiple bacteria, which could require treatment with different antibiotics. This explains why up to 50% of people treated following a tick bite go on to develop chronic symptoms.
Common Misconceptions About Lyme Disease:
Ticks need to be attached for 24-36 hours to transmit Lyme disease
This claim has not been substantiated, and evidence has shown that ticks can transmit infections in as little as a few hours.
You need to develop a bullseye rash to have Lyme disease
Although a bullseye rash is diagnostic of Lyme disease, few people develop this rash that go on to develop Lyme disease. In one study, only 17% of people who developed Lyme disease had a bullseye rash.
If Lyme disease is not diagnosed and treated early, the spirochetes can spread and may go into hiding in different parts of the body. Weeks, months or even years later, patients may develop problems with the brain and nervous system, muscles and joints, heart and circulation, digestion, reproductive system, and skin. Symptoms may disappear even without treatment, and different symptoms may appear at different times.
If you are someone you love has a tick bite, DON’T hesitate-call the experts who will evaluate and guide you to the proper testing and treatment. Remember, the best way to treat Lyme disease is to prevent it!
